Summary. — The numismatists don't agree about the identification of what was the chal- kos among the bronze coins minted by the Greek cities. In European Greece, the chalkos was the smallest bronze unit in all the monetary systems ; it had no fraction and the multiples of the chalkos were the most frequently called obol's fractions. In the eastern part of the hellenistic world, the chalkos is usually identified as a heavier coin, divisible in many fractions. Can we admit that two quite different bronze systems coexist ?
