Abstract .This article explores belief in divine intervention in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England and considers the implications which the phenomenon of providentialism has for an understanding of the impact and entrenchment of the Protestant Reformation. It first surveys the general historiographical trends and then turns to examine the doctrine of providence and its practical manifestations in puritan piety and popular culture, focussing upon tales of God' s judgements, accounts of prodigies and wonders, and the question of the continutation or cessation of iracles.
