Abstract This article traces the artistic and economic factors that led to the establishment of the Royal Italian Opera as London's principal opera house during the mid-191'' century, a development that was crucially influenced by the company's close links with Paris. Set up in direct competition to the traditional opera house, Her Majesty's Theatre, the Royal Italian Opera was to become a bastion of French opera under its second and longest- serving manager, Frederick Gye. Through the regular acquisition of current grands operas Gye was able to mount a highly competitive programme which secured his company a certain degree of financial and artistic stability and ensured its long-term survival.Résumé Cet article retrace les raisons artistiq...
