La pince et le soufflet : deux techniques de forge : traditionnelles au Nord-Togo

This investigation on the blacksmiths of the Bassar agglomeration in Northern Togo has shown up the existence of two distinct groups of blacksmiths which prouved to be complementary : relatively specialized, on the one hand, in the production of specific objects, they are also complementary in the treatment of iron (one group transforming the metal before hand for the other). In order to show this complementary, a detailed comparison of tools, of the kinds of work organization and of techniques was established (leading us to complete, at the same time, the existing descriptions of the technology of one of the groups, the one of the Bassar blacksmiths). The differences thus shown up emphasize the interest given to technological characteristics as it is through them it becomes possible to explain the obvious difference as to the forged objects and, at the same time, clarify the way in which some iron exchanges are carried out. This study raises the question as to the possibility of identifying in other African regions, similar phenomena which might only exist in a latent form.Cette investigation sur les forgerons de l'agglomération de Bassar au Nord-Togo a permis de mettre en évidence l'existence de deux groupes distincts de forgerons, s'avérant complémentaires : relativement spécialisés d'une part dans la production d'objets déterminés, ils sont également complémentaires dans le traitement du fer (l'un transformant préalablement le métal pour l'autre). Pour rendre compte de cette complémentarité, une comparaison détaillée des outillages, des formes d'organisation du travail et des techniques a été établie (imposant de compléter par la même occasion les descriptions connues de la technologie de l'un des groupes, celui des forgerons bassar). Les différences ainsi relevées ont permis de souligner la pertinence de l'intérêt accordé aux caractéristiques technologiques, puisque c'est à travers elles qu'il devient possible d'expliquer la différence affirmée quant à la qualité des objets forgés et, du même coup, d'élucider certains comportements en matière d'échanges portant sur le fer. Ce travail soulève la question de la possibilité d'identifier, dans d'autres régions d'Afrique, des phénomènes similaires qui pourraient n'y être présents que sous une forme latente.Dugast Stephan.
