African slavery after the 1848 abolition decree: servitude and jus soli. Slavery represented the most usual endogenous social institution and the most widespread system of labor in West Africa during the second half of the 19th century. Many wars were connected with the trading of slaves sold at cheap prices. A genuine boom of the slave trade brought about an unprecedented dissemination of slaves which resulted in a strong economic growth. In order not to impede its policy of imperialist expansion, France betrayed the form and spirit of the 1848 decree and noticeably refused to apply the republican notion of jus soli.
