The three heritages of Michel de Certeau. The divided project of a theory of modernity. The heritage of Michel de Certeau has been so much scattered in different fields of research, in social sciences and in various countries that it is nearly impossible to think of an unity of his work. The history of mystics, the epistemology of history, the socio-anthropology of religion, the sociology of culture, the Cultural Studies, the research on media technologies, are now all impregnated with this concepts and results but usually do not connect them together. This paper tries to reevaluate the multiple writings of Michel de Certeau and some of their receptions in order to establish that there was no general theory of modernity in them but the methodological project of producing such a theory. This project began with the study of mystics as a part of secularisation and with the study of secularisation as the invention of an independant sphere of cultural practices. It postulated that epistemology could not at all be segmented from empirical study, especially when the focus is on the popular (who talks when you talk about the "popular"?). It then introduced a new theory of beliefs and practices, and of the links between then, which could explain the different changes brought in modernity.Les trois héritages de Michel de Certeau. L'héritage de Michel de Certeau est à ce point dispersé dans des champs de recherche, des disciplines et des pays différents qu'il semble impossible de conférer une unité à son œuvre. L'histoire de la mystique, l'épistémologie de l'histoire, la socio-anthropologie des religions, la sociologie de la culture, les Cultural Studies, la recherche sur les nouvelles technologies, sont imprégnées de ses concepts et de ses résultats mais ne les relient pas entre eux. Cet article passe en revue les multiples écrits de Michel de Certeau et certaines de leurs réceptions afin de montrer qu'un projet d'analyse de la modernité se dégageait d'eux. Ce projet débute avec l'étude de la mystique comme manifestation de la sécularisation et avec l'étude de la sécularisation comme invention d'un espace autonome de pratiques culturelles. Il souligne que la dimension épistémologique ne peut être séparée de l'étude empirique, surtout dans le cas du « populaire » (qui décrète ce qu'est le « populaire » ?). Une nouvelle théorie des croyances et des pratiques, et des liens qui les unissent, complète un projet qui tente de cerner les changements apportés par la modernité.Maigret Éric.
