Charlotte Schmid On the First Representations of the Buffalo-slayer: Goddesses and the first Krsna-centred Cults This paper surveys the hitherto unknown links between the major Hindu goddess Mahisamardinī, She who destroys the buffalo, and the first cults devoted to Krsna. The "Buffalo-breaker" is commonly regarded as one of the consorts of Śiva and she is worshipped as such in most Shaiva temples. Her relation to Śiva is both ancient and attested to by the first texts recounting the myth of the fight against the buffalo demon, in the 6th century. But Mahisamardinī is a goddess of obscure origins, her abundant images being the only clues we have to her popularity during the first five centuries of our era. These first known images share a number of iconographical characteristics with those used at that time to represent Krsna and what I have called here the proto-avatāras. Such an iconography may indicate that, for a certain period of time, this goddess was associated with cults devoted to Krsna. The study of Vaishnava Gupta sites where representations of the Buffalo-slayer are to be found in situ leads us to regard Mahisamardinī as being still more closely associated with Vaishnava contexts than with Shaiva ones in the 5th and the 6th centuries. She seems, however, to disappear from such Vaishnava contexts with the appearance of the first Shaiva purānas. The fight against the buffalo does not appear in early narrative texts. Notwithstanding this absence, analysis of the Mahābhārata and of the Harivamsa allows us better to understand the appearance of Mahisāsuramardinī in Vaishnava contexts, where she may have been considered as a form of female avatāra. The late appearance of the Buffalo-breaker in the Shaiva tradition could be due, at least in part, to the ambivalence of the early Shaiva tradition towards narrative. From the 5-6th centuries, when the first known Shaiva purānas appear to have emerged, it seems likely that the goddess, who began at that point to be commonly represented as killing the buffalo with a trident, could be more easily assimilated into Shaiva cults than into the Vaishnava tradition.Charlotte Schmid A propos des premières images de la Tueuse de buffle : déesses et krishnaïsme ancien. La Tueuse de buffle est en effet toujours considérée sous l'angle d'une relation avec le dieu Śiva, ancienne et attestée dès les premiers témoignages littéraires rapportant le mythe de la lutte contre le buffle, au VIe siècle. Mahisamardinī est cependant une divinité aux origines obscures. Ses représentations, abondantes, sont actuellement le seul témoignage de sa popularité avant le VIe siècle. Ces images d'une déesse qui tue le démon sans effusion de sang partagent bien des caractéristiques iconographiques avec celles du mouvement krishnaïte d'alors et inclinent à associer cette lutteuse à un champ cultuel proche de celui des Bhāgavata. L'aspect narratif de ses représentations semble en revanche l'empêcher alors de se rapprocher des mouvements çivaïtes. Les ensembles gupta in situ et un important site pallava du VIe siècle témoignent eux aussi de l'association privilégiée de cette déesse et des cultes vishnouites, où la notion de divinité incarnée permet d'accueillir une déesse active luttant contre un démon. L'analyse de la tradition textuelle antérieure au VIe siècle et surtout celle du HV, consacré à Krsna et daté des Ier-IVe siècles de notre ère, permet de mieux comprendre l'apparition de la Tueuse de buffle dans un cadre vishnouite, où elle apparaît comme une forme ďavatāra féminin. L'apparition des premiers textes narratifs çivaïtes, où la déesse plonge dorénavant son trident dans le corps du buffle comme elle le fait sur les images, correspond à son insertion dans les ensembles cultuels çivaïtes.Schmid Charlotte.
