Gérard Diffloth Expressives of Surin, and where they lead us Expressives constitute a fundamental word class in many languages of Asia; they represent an attempt by the speaker to transmit a sensation to the hearer as directly as language allows. Using evidence from the variety of Khmer spoken in Surin Province, Thailand, we suggest that the phonological forms of expressives are the result of improvisation based on a phonaesthetic system and concatenation rules which are language-specific. Expressives are extremely difficult to elicit in the field, and have generally been neglected; yet they contain precious clues for semantics, history, and perhaps the evolution of human language.Gérard Diffloth Les expressifs de Surin, et où cela conduit...
