ABSTRACT EDUCATED FISHERMEN R. H. BARNES The fishing and whaling village of Lamalera, Indonesia has experienced nearly a hundred years of externally induced social change, including education, Christianity, governmental reorganization, improved transportation, and an intensive three year project by the Food and Agricultural Organization. The cumulative effects of these changes have brought the traditional economy under severe pressure and curtailed the village's growth. Natural events have also had adverse consequences. Yet the apparent decline in village vigor may just as well be attributed to the community's success in coping with change.
