TELEVISION AND DEMOCRACY : CONCERNING THE STATUS OF PERFORMANCE Democracy has become the least ill-suited system that we know for managing conflicts between belief patterns. Médiatisation of industrial societies has made the enunciative strategies structuring social discourses more and more visible. Nevertheless, this visibility of performances is not easily acceptable : both newspaper men and politicians still speak in the name of truth and sincerity, that is, at a « first degree » level of belief.
