Interpretation of the geomorphic setting of the Cuicuilco basin, Mexico City, affected by the pre-Hispanic eruption of the Xitle volcano / Interprétation de l'environnement géomorphologique du bassin de Cuicuilco, ville de Mexico, affecté par l'éruption pré-hispanique du volcan Xitle

Abstract The pre-Hispanic eruption of the monogenetic Xitle volcano affected the southern area of Mexico City, silting water environments and forming a rough lava field. Recent archaeological and geomorphological findings in a new commercial centre near the Cuicuilco pyramids have contributed new evidence towards the palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the area and its possible link with the end of the Cuicuilco culture. The main geomorphic processes included the filling of the Cuicuilco lake by direct volcanic ashfall and transported volcanic sediments by large floods, and the covering of an extensive piedmont by thick lava flows. The obtained 14C age of 1490 ± 55 years BP is among the youngest measured dates on the site. The eruption affected a populated area and was one of the most devastating eruptions in human history.Résumé L'éruption pré-hispanique du volcan monogénétique Xitle a affecté la zone sud de la ville de Mexico, en formant une zone de lave rugueuse et en accentuant la sédimentation dans le lac de Cuicuilco. Des découvertes récentes, archéologiques et géomorphologiques, sur le site d'un nouveau centre commercial à proximité des pyramides de Cuicuilco, ont permis de reconstituer les paléo-environnements de la zone et de considérer l'existence d'un lien possible entre l'éruption et la fin de la civilisation Cuicuilco. Les principaux processus géomorphologiques sont, d'une part, le remplissage du lac Cuicuilco, d'abord par les cendres projetées lors de l'éruption puis par les dépôts volcaniques transportés au cours de grandes inondations et, d'autre part, le recouvrement dun vaste piémont par des couches de lave épaisse. La datation I4C de 1490 ± 55 ans BP est Г une des mesures les plus récentes réalisées sur le site.
