Le vent à Saint-Etienne (Loire) : élément significatif du climat et risque naturel majeur / The wind at Saint-Etienne : a significant climatic factor and a major natural hazard

Anemometric observations carried out for twenty years at the top of one of the highest hills of Saint-Etienne show the dependence of the wind rose on the orientation of the three large divergent valleys which characterize the site of this agglomeration. They also show the regular existence of daily alternating breezes from these valleys to the Pilat mountain. Moreover, they demonstrate that the southerly storm winds which rush down from the Pilat are a major climatic hazard for the town. However Saint Etienne is affected by periods of major atmos-pheric pollution when the atmosphere is stable.Les observations anémo- métriques effectuées depuis 20 ans au sommet d'une des plus hautes collines de Saint-Etienne révèlent l'assujettissement de la rose des vents à l'orientation des trois grandes vallées divergentes caractéristiques du site de l'agglomération, ainsi que l'existence habituelle d'un régime de brises journalières alternées entre ces vallées et le massif du Pilât. Elles montrent en outre que les vents de tempête de secteur sud, qui s'accélèrent en dévalant du Pilât, constituent un risque climatique majeur pour cette ville. Celle-ci n'est pas épargnée pour autant par les épisodes de forte pollution atmosphérique en atmosphère calme.Suchel Jean-Bernard.
