Sana'a is mentionned only in the beginning of J.-C. era. Situated in the heart of the high plateau and intramontane plains, Sana'a is surrounded by some prosperous rural villages. Small town (18 000 inh.) in 1939, its growing begins only after the civil war (1969) : 140 000 inhabitants in 1974 (31,7 % outborn). The activities are dominated by services (72,6 %), then by retailing : industrialisation is still petty (one big textil plant) but agriculture remains noticeable.
