Germany lacks a comprehensive legal framework which deals with the various problems raised by recent advances in the development of biomedical sciences. Sofar, Parliament has only intervened in limited areas in order to impose criminal sanctions on certain activities in the field of biomedicine which it considers as a threatto fundamental principles protec-ted by the Constitution. Apart from these cases, the definition of the precise conditions for the application of new research methods and médical treatments is largely left to the codes ofconduct established by the compétent professional bodies.
