The us catholic church. the failure of « present age » catholicism (1780-1899) In spite of an a priori contrary political-religious setup, Catholicism developed in the United States by attempting to incorporate modern liberal and democratic values. This adaptation effort ran up, throughout the 19th century, against the unshakable opposition of the papacy. After the American hierarchy's failure to create a national church, lay Catholics had to give up the congregational organization which they had tried to establish, in accordance with the dominant American pattern of religiosity. The clash with Rome culminated at the very end of the century during the « Americanism » crisis, when the American liberal bishops became the spokesmen in Europ...
