The us catholic church. the failure of « present age » catholicism (1780-1899) In spite of an a priori contrary political-religious setup, Catholicism developed in the United States by attempting to incorporate modern liberal and democratic values. This adaptation effort ran up, throughout the 19th century, against the unshakable opposition of the papacy. After the American hierarchy's failure to create a national church, lay Catholics had to give up the congregational organization which they had tried to establish, in accordance with the domi­nant American pattern of religiosity. The clash with Rome culminated at the very end of the cen­tury during the « Americanism » crisis, when the American liberal bishops became the spo­kesmen in Europe of« present age » Catholicism. The 1899 pontifical condemnation put off for 50 years the Church's acceptance of the new society being built before its very eyes.Malgré une configuration politico-religieuse a priori hostile, le catholicisme s'est développé aux Etats-Unis en s'efforçant d'intégrer les valeurs de la modernité libérale et démocratique. Cet effort d'adaptation s'est heurté, tout au long du 19e siècle, à l'opposition inébranlable de la papauté. Après l'échec de la création par I'episcopal américain d'une église nationale, ce sont les laïcs qui ont dû renoncer au mode d'organisation congrégationnel qu'ils avaient tenté d'établir, se conformant en cela au mode de religiosité dominant aux États-Unis. L'affronte­ment avec Rome culmine dans les toutes dernières années du siècle lors de la « crise américaniste », quand les évêques libéraux américains se font les porte-parole en Europe d'un catholicisme « dans le siècle ». La condamnation pontificale de 1899 reportera d'un demi-siècle l'acceptation par l'Église de la société nouvelle qui s'édifie sous ses yeux.Froidevaux Camille.
