The strategies of iran's religious intellectuals and clerics confronted with western modernity Two major of religious thought, made up of religious intellectuals as well as clerics, clash in Iran on the possibility and the necessity of an adaptation of religion to modernity : the traditionalists refute the ideas derived from western modernity, which they label as incompatible with Islam ; the modernists attempt to reconcile Islam with modernity. This confrontation goes back to the constitutional revolution of 1906, when the lay intellectuals' plea for the democratization of the political structures was transformed into the political ideology of a social movement, causing the division of the clergy between pro- and anti-constitutionalists. Despite of the failure of constitutionalism, this debate about the construction of an Islamic political model has been pur- sued, confronted with modernizing-authoritarian states whose policies of secularization and western-style acculturation could threaten religion. The constitutional law and the political system of the Islamic Republic derived from the 1979 revolution embody these contradictory visions : a religious autocracy is tied to an electoral system in a configuration closer to the western democratic model than to Islamic traditions. The instrumentalization of Islam as a state political ideology has led to the secularization of religion, by constructing a political field that compromises the sacred in the secular. This linkage of the religious and the political has enabled citizens, by grasping politics, to intervene in the religious field so as to demand its adaptation to the reality of a modern society. It has made it possible for religious intellectuals and modernist clerics to demand the Aggiornamento of religious thought.Deux courants principaux de la pensée religieuse, composés aussi bien d'intellectuels religieux que de clercs, s'affrontent en Iran sur la possibilité et la nécessité d'une adaptation de la religion à la modernité : les traditionalistes réfutent les idées issues de la modernité occidentale les qualifiant d'incompatibles avec l'islam, les modernistes tentent de concilier l'islam avec la modernité. Cet affrontement trouve ses origines dans la révolution constitutionnelle de 1906, quand le plaidoyer des intellectuels laïcs pour la démocratisation des structures politiques s'est mué en idéologie politique d'un mouvement social, provoquant la division du clergé entre pro et anticonstitutionnalistes. En dépit de l'échec du constitutionnalisme, ce débat concernant la construction d'un modèle politique islamique s'est poursuivi face aux États modernisateurs auto­ritaires dont les politiques de laïcisation et d'acculturation occidentale pouvaient représenter une menace pour la religion. La loi constitutionnelle et le système politique de la République islamique issus de la révolution de 1979 incarnent ces visions contradictoires : une autocratie religieuse est unie à un dispositif électoral dans une configuration plus proche du modèle de la démocratie occidentale que des traditions islamiques. L'instrumentalisation de l'islam comme idéologie politique de l'État a conduit en retour à la sécularisation de la religion en construisant un champ politique qui compromet le sacré dans le profane. Cette articulation entre le religieux et le politique a permis aux citoyens, en se saisissant du politique, d'intervenir dans le champ religieux pour revendiquer son adaptation à la réalité d'une société moderne. Elle a ouvert aux intellectuels religieux et clercs modernistes la possibilité de réclamer /'aggiorna-mento de la pensée religieuse.Kian-Thiebaut Azadeh.
