The victory of Margaret Thatcher and the British Conservatives in 1979 in the U.K., following the fallure of the referenda on devolution, seemed to put and end to an period which had been characterised by peripherie nationalist daims. The "Thatcher years" were nevertheless to witness the progressive strengthening of the Scottish identity and a nationalist revival, leading to a critical questioning of the working of the Union by Scottish opinion.
