An analysis of the mechanism of causal attribution in the candidates' discourse reveals a highly rigid discursive system which can be formalized. The political actor sets himself up as the agent of the most diverse social phenomena. There is a consensus on that between the incumbent and his challengers, even if the pre-1988 context of " cohabitation " enlarges the field of possible attributions. Such an explanatory structure owes its stability to the operation of political discourse, impregnated with psychologism and always ready to reduce causality to co-variation.
