This article analyses the myth of « Stalin the humanist », the role of intellectuals such as Barbusse, Malraux, Ehrenburg and Nizan in launching it and using it as a propaganda tool during the electoral campaign of 1935-36 to woo moderate voters, especially the radicals and a sizeable part of the intelligentsia. It emphasises the necessity of such a myth, its contribution to the creation of an antifascist front, to the integration of thé French Communist party in thé life of thé nation, to that of thé USSR in international relations and to the electoral victory of the French Left in 1936.
