La philosophie politique de l'Église catholique : changement ou permanence ?

Was Vatican II, as often said, the rime of reconciliation between the Catholic Church and modernity ? On the specifie ground of politics, the analysis of the magisterium texts leads to a certain circumspection. Like the pre-conciliar Church, the pontiffs of aggiornamento refused to subscribe to the modem idea of the autonomy of politics. Faithful to the neo-thomist scheme of their predecessors, they affirmed again, in a triple paradigm, that : 1) thé origin of public authority is to be found in divine intelligence ; 2) authority must be exercised in accordance with divine law ; and 3) any violation of this law opens to the governed a legirimate right of resistance. Sur le terrain spécifique du politique, l'analyse des textes du magistère invite à une certaine circonspection. A l'exemple de l'Eglise pré-conciliaire, les pontifes de l'aggiornamento se refusent en effet à souscrire à l'idée moderne d'autonomie du politique. Reprenant le schéma néo-thomiste de leurs prédécesseurs, ils rappellent, en un paradigme à triple composante, 1) que l'autorité publique trouve son origine dans l'intelligence divine, 2) qu'elle doit s'exercer en conformité avec la loi de Dieu, 3) que tout manquement à cette loi ouvre aux gouvernés un droit légitime de résistance.
