THE SOCIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SOCIALIST PARTY, by PATRICK HARDOUIN The social composition of the Socialist Party has changed considerably compared with that of the SFIO. There has been a twofold shift — one to match the trend of French society (thus, from being the schoolteacher's party, the SP has become the professor's party) and the other involving change (the loss of the worker substance). Within the Socialist movement, the intelligentsia is dominant as regards both membership and power in the Party. The Socialist movement consists of an elitist structure resting on a popular structure. To the extent that the electorate remains popular and working class in character, a decline in the share of the working class membership means a change in the rôle of the Party rank and file in the Socialist movement, but not a change in the nature of this movement. Il y a eu un double mouvement d'adaptation à l'évolution de la société française (ainsi, de parti des instituteurs, le PS devient le parti des professeurs) et de mutation (perte de la substance ouvrière). Au sein du mouvement socialiste, l'intelligentsia domine tant au niveau de l'adhésion, qu'au niveau du pouvoir dans le parti. Mais la domination de cet élément ne résume pas toute la sociologie du Parti socialiste. Le mouvement socialiste se compose d'une structure élitiste assise sur une structure populaire. Dans la mesure où l'électoral garde son caractère populaire et ouvrier, un déclin de la place des catégories populaires parmi les adhérents signifie un changement dans le rôle de la base du parti dans le mouvement socialiste mais non un changement dans la nature de ce mouvement.
