One cannot play with peace, by Pierre Hassner Since the late sixties, American studies on collective violence and European discussions on peace research, have had parallel evolutions. First, a broadening of studies on conflict violence and peace from the international area to the domestic one, and from inter-state relations between great powers to relations between unequal opponents, whether states or other groups. Second a trend towards legitimizing or justifying revolutionary violence. The discovery of the structural or institutional violence of the social or the international system has led a wing of the peace research movement to denounce any search for peace as such as being a tool of the status quo. The weaknesses of this position and the evolution of industrial societies and of the international system lead towards looking for a synthesis or a third position. One can evaluate Johann Galtung's contribution to this search and make some additional suggestions meant to overcome the twin dangers of the pragmatism of military force and of conservative legalism (which is the temptation of the strategic "right" wing of the arms control school) on the one hand, and of the romanticism of revolutionary violence and of utopique pacifism (which is the temptation of the revolutionary "left" wing of the peace research school) on the other. Premièrement, élargissement des études sur les conflits, la violence et la paix, du domaine international au domaine intérieur, et du domaine des relations interétatiques entre grandes puissances à celui des rapports entre adversaires inégaux, étatiques ou non-étatiques. Deuxièmement, la tendance à légitimer voire à valoriser positivement la violence révolutionnaire. La découverte de la violence institutionnalisée ou structurelle du système social ou international amène une aile de la peace research à dénoncer toute recherche de la paix en tant que telle comme étant au service du statu quo. Les insuffisances de cette position ainsi que l'évolution des sociétés industrielles et celle du système international amènent à chercher une synthèse dans un dépassement. On peut évaluer la contribution de Johann Galtung à cet effort et faire quelques autres suggestions pour éviter les écueils du pragmatisme de la force militaire et du légalisme conservateur (tentation de l'aile "droite" ou stratégique de l'arms control) et ceux du romantisme de la violence révolutionnaire et du pacifisme utopiste (tentation de l'aile "gauche", révolutionnaire, de la peace research).
