The elections of 19th November 1972 in the German Federal Republic: a conjunctural vote or a far-reaching political development?, by René Lasserre It would appear that the defeat of the CDU-CSU is not due solely to a temporary loss of favour, but is the result of more deep-seated shifts in the electorate. The changes in the rural and the female vote and the diminution of the religious factor indicate a marked retreat on the part of traditional attitudes and modes of thought. At the same time, political behaviour and even culture has altered; the defeat of the CDU-CSU is the penalty for the latter's failure to reconsider its doctrine in the light of political and social change.
