In 1906, the newspaper Le Petit Parisien launched a competition, richly endowed, « The game of the Great Men ». It was intended to designate the ten most illustrious Frenchmen of the 19th Century. Pasteur was top of the list, followed by Hugo, Gambetta and Napoleon the First. The Third Republic found in Pasteur the model of its lay-saint. This result, commented upon by the newspaper, created an "icon" of Pasteur, "the man who defeated death" (1885). This icon overshadows two previous images of this "great man".
