L'effet Montyon

By delegating to the Académie francaise the right to give two prizes founded by himself, M. de Montyon had a strong influence over the activities of the « Compagnie » during the XIXth century. As a matter of fact, he contributed in giving an institutional definition of « Literature », as we call it today, which implied for the Academie francaise a moral and utilitarian purpose. The writer was supposed to be modest in order to touch readers with limited abilities. But this limitation to the writer's imagination or personal impulse became an aesthetic purpose of its own through the assimilation of the beauty of the process of writing with the beauty of the text. Utility created its own style which was illustrated in a curious manner by writers who could have won fame elsewhere, in vaudeville theatres for example. Thus, it is a whole aspect of literary life, to which « modernity » has objected, which is involved here.En déléguant à l'Académie française le soin d'attribuer deux prix fondés par lui, M. de Montyon a exercé une influence considérable sur la « Compagnie » au XIXe siècle. Il a en effet contribué à définir institutionnellement ce que nous appelons aujourd'hui « Littérature » et qui pour l'Académie renvoie à un projet moral et utilitaire. L'auteur doit se faire modeste pour toucher des lecteurs aux capacités réduites, mais cette limite imposée à l'imagination ou à des élans personnels en vient à prendre une coloration esthétique, par une assimilation entre la beauté du geste et la beauté du texte. L'utilité crée aussi son style, un style curieusement illustré par des écrivains qui peuvent s'illustrer ailleurs, au théâtre de vaudeville par exemple.
