By delegating to the Académie francaise the right to give two prizes founded by himself, M. de Montyon had a strong influence over the activities of the « Compagnie » during the XIXth century. As a matter of fact, he contributed in giving an institutional definition of « Literature », as we call it today, which implied for the Academie francaise a moral and utilitarian purpose. The writer was supposed to be modest in order to touch readers with limited abilities.
