This paper shows how the Chartreuse de Parme gives a romantic reinterpretation of the troubadour lyric poetry. In De l'Amour, Stendhal recognizes that the provencal conception of the so called amor de longh (love at distance) represents an exemplary form of his own theory of « cristallisation » an idealization of the beloved, whose distance is a.necessary condition for the lasting desire of the lover. Contrary to the Ovidian tradition (« remedies » can cure the « sickness » of love), the provencal tradition Stendhal inherits accentuates the absolute submission of the lover, even if he has to suffer, which leads to a paradoxical happiness.
