From nominal to real depreciation : the factors of african devaluations effectiveness Many developing countries used devaluations in order to depreciate their real exchange rate. The degree of devaluation effectiveness, i.e. how much nominal depreciation leads to real depreciation, is here assumed to depend mainly on the ways and means of the devaluation : it is stronger the lower the total devaluation and the more concentrated in time it is. Real depreciation also depends on the level of initial distorsions. The model is tested on a sample of thirty-nine developing countries, and a sub-sample of twenty African countries.
