The international specialization of the French economy The words absolute or relative specialization can offert be found in the economic literature. The concept, however, is never clearly defined, nor are the criteria enabling to evaluate it laid down. At best, one can draw from the analyses in International Economies the vague idea that a country is specialized in a product whenever it exports a part of it. Such a specialization is absolute with Ricardo — the country becomes monoproductive —, whereas it is more relative with Heckscher. But as soon as the simple model with two goods and two facfors is left aside, the concept turns more blurred and it appears necessary to go back to real.
