The purpose of this study is to analyze the prospects for the transformation of the French banking sector by evaluating the relation between excess capacity and production cost observed in the beginning of the nine teen's. The excess capacity of French banks made the services they provide inefficient. Our results show that banks were able to reduce their cost by some 36 per cent, if they corrected the factor inefficiencies we discovered. We note also that the levels of efficiency scores influenced significantly the banks production costs.
