This paper uses a sample of more than 400 000 changes in sectorial employment in France from 1974 to 1979, in the 50 industries having experienced the highest rates of change in employment during the period. Skilled labour and the technical content of industry have been selected as explanatory variables. Tests show no direct relations between these variables and the rate of change in sectorial employment. On the other hand the selected variables give an explanation of exports and of the sharing of imports between OECD and the rest of the world.
