The book publishing industry, for which we will argue ther market structure is one of oligopoly with a competitive fringe, offers a case study of the relationship between large and small enterprises. The small firms do not at all constitute a homogeneous group characterized by certain established positions in the industry ; such as a limited market and a dependance vis-a-vis the large firms for subcontracting. On the contrary, these two criteria, in this context are mutually exclusive : the precariousness of these small firms is a result of an unreconcilable dilemma between setting up production in a specialized market, under recession, which implies an independent distribution network, and setting up production in a non specialized market ...
