Les enfants téléspectateurs. Prégnance des représentations médiatiques et amnésie de la recherche

The perpetual recurrence of themes related to the condition of the "child TV viewer" is probably symptomatic of the difficulty of analysing a highly complex social reality. Yet there is nothing inevitable about this incessant repetition of the same questions and representations, and the integration of an historical dimension seem to be a sound way of breaking out of such a sterile logic. An analysis of writings on child-television relations, from the origins of the medium to the present, highlights an important shortcoming: a considerable gap exists between the findings of scientific studies and popularized discourse. A fully relevant examination of child-television relations necessarily involves a combination of theoretical and practical knowledge, a recognition of acquired know-how, and an articulation of those theoretical conceptions which have proved to be most convincing.La résurgence obsessionnelle des thématiques liées à la condition « d'enfant téléspectateur » est sans doute symptomatique de la difficulté à penser une réalité sociale assurément fort complexe. Cependant, il n'y a pas tant de fatalité à ce retour incessant aux mêmes questionnements et aux mêmes représentations. L'intégration de la dimension historique peut être un bon moyen de sortir de cette logique stérilisante. L'examen des productions écrites sur le rapport enfant-télévision, des origines à nos jours, met en relief un important défaut de transfert : un écart notable existe entre les résultats auxquels ont abouti les travaux scientifiques et les discours de vulgarisation. Penser la relation enfant-télévision avec suffisamment de pertinence suppose un partage entre connaissances familières et connaissances théoriques, une recognition des savoirs acquis et une articulation des conceptions théoriques qui se sont révélées les plus convaincantes.Baton-Hervé Elisabeth.
