For many years it has been assumed that the local part of telecommunication systems were « natural monopolies » in which the benefits of competitive supply were understood as being outweighed by additional costs of duplicating provision. This idea has now come under attack, with opponents pointing to the recent experience of Great Britain and, in particular, its cable-based telecommunication competition. In this paper the authors examine that experience more closely. They conclude that announcements of the total extinction of the telecommunications monopoly are perhaps premature. Rather, a more complex situation is foreseen in which areas of intense competition will co-exist with areas of de facto monopoly over local supply.Pendant des anné...
