The value attached to audience studies in the eighties tended to shift interest away from the influence of the media onto the interpretation of the public. It seems that a prejudicial gap is thus being created between research on public knowledge, focused on non-fiction, and research on popular culture oriented more towards entertainment. As a result, a considerable degree of confusion around the notion of meaning has undermined the theorization of text-public relations. The author, who wishes to clarify this debate, suggests we examine more closely the way in which the genre of a programme affects viewing.
