Une société électronique technicienne face à l'élargissement du réseau. Les usages d'Internet dans un centre de recherche

This article draws upon a survey among experienced and new users of the Internet in a technological research centre. The majority of seasoned users are computer engineers capable of using the resources of the Internet (e-Mail, news forums, downloading software, the Web) for very specific professional purposes. New users, on the other hand, have a more varied profile and in the main are still unsure about what use to make of the Net. The former are conscious of forming an electronic community characterized by members' technical skills in using the network, as well as by a set of social practices of which the net-label is merely one of the better-known features. With the opening up of the Internet to other publics and practices, they clearly fear a dénaturation of the « Internet spirit ». These seasoned users attest to a certain proselytism and contribute to the propagation of current utopie rhetoric concerning the Internet.Cet article est tiré d'une enquête pratiquée dans un centre de recherche technique auprès d'utilisateurs chevronnés et débutants d'Internet. Les premiers présentent un profil professionnel très homogène puisqu'ils sont dans leur écrasante majorité des ingénieurs-informaticiens capables d'utiliser les ressources d'Internet (e-Mail, forums de news, captation de logiciels, Web) pour leurs usages professionnels très ciblés. Les seconds, qui représentent des professions plus variées, s'interrogent encore sur l'usage qu'ils peuvent avoir du réseau. Les anciens utilisateurs ont conscience de former une communauté électronique dont les membres se reconnaissent non seulement à la compétence technique acquise pour utiliser le réseau mais également à un ensemble de pratiques sociales dont la net-étiquette n'est que l'un des éléments les plus connus. Devant l'ouverture d'Internet à d'autres publics et à d'autres pratiques, ils craignent manifestement une dénaturation de l'« esprit d'Internet ». Ces utilisateurs chevronnés témoignent d'un certain prosélytisme et concourent à la propagation du discours utopique actuel concernant Internet.Carmagnat Fanny.
