In this article the author provides a critical synthesis of two prevalent approaches in the sociology of technology: the translation approach and that of the diffusion of innovation. In particular, he focuses on two distinct but complementary conceptions of the notion of socio-technological networks. By highlighting the respective shortcomings of these two approaches in relation to current developments in communication technologies, he suggests shifting the semiotic trend by means of the notion of « affordance » (regarding translation) and envisaging in more detail the interface between networks for the diffusion of innovation and those for its development (regarding diffusion).
