The author calls into question the different research traditions' propositions for explaining TV viewers' involvement in television texts. Using the example of soaps, she shows how simple dichotomies break up into a number of complex and fluid forms of involvement, with interpretations of the text which lead the same TV viewer to adopt different positions.
