This article explains how French radio and television became a State monopoly, and why this status was then withdrawn from it. The generally accepted idea on the subject is that the executive in France had from the start tried to secure control of all means of communication, and that the State monopoly of the radio and later television, was the continuation of a telecommunications monopoly dating back to the beginnings of the telegraph. We show that, on the contrary, the setting up of a monopoly coincided with the relatively short post- War period during which State radio and television freed itself from telecommunications legislation.
