NEW AMERICAN CABLE LEGISLATION - REDUCING THE MARKET POWER OF CABLO-OPERATORS Jean-Pierre Coustel A new law recently modified the état défait in the United States implied by the implementation of the very liberal 1984 Cable Act. In spite of president Bush's veto and cable operators' lobbying, new regulations limit monopolistic positions and take consumers' interests into account. In describing the economic and legal developments in this sector between 1985 and 1992, the author foresees a new balance of power between networks and cable operators, with the acquisition of the latter by the former checking their decline.
