In the I960's two radio stations made a frontal attack on the BBC's radiophonie monopoly, and although both drew a large share of listeners and sponsorship, they each had a very different approach. Launched in 1964, nine months before Radio London, Caroline remained a kind of prototype of the counter-cultural "pirate" radios, whilst London took a more pioneering, legalistic position and relied on multinational financing which eventually led it to profit the BBC.
