Fertility in Côte d'Ivoire has declined rapidly over the last 15 years, with the average number of children per woman falling from 7.2 in 1980 to 5.7 in 1994, despite the fact that contraceptive use remains very low. Of the different possible mechanisms for birth spacing, induced abortion in this country, where it is illegal and often performed clandestinely, remains poorly understood.
