Horvath (Robert). - From the Military Census to the Universal Census. The First Census in Hungary (1784-1785) Joseph II ordered the first Hungarian census to be carried out in 1784-1785 in which the country's entire population without exception was enumerated. « Updates », based on data from population movements, were undertaken during the following years, but were soon abandoned. The operation was part of a large movement which led to the establishment of the first modern censuses in Europe and the United States during the second half of the 18th century.
