Fargues Philippe.— The decline in Arab birth rates. Birth rates in Arab populations have begun to fall, but there are strong regional differences. In the paper the levels and most recent trends revealed by civil registration in the few countries where such data are reliable are presented. Evolution in time and variation in space are then examined. A slow rise in birth rates had preceded the decline recorded during the last few years. These two opposite trends are due to changes in the institution of marriage : decrease in the number of divorces during the first half of the 20th century, followed by increase in the age of women at first marriage.
