Biraben Jean-Noël. — Rabelais, Demographer and Utopian Writer about Population. Rabelais was born in Chinon in about 1490 and died in Paris in 1553. He was a humanist famous for his erudition. The daring ideas he put forward in his great work on Gargantua and Pantagruel, published in five volumes between 1532 and 1564, led to his persecution and, despite the protection afforded him by Francis I and Henry II, he had difficulty in escaping. As the author tells us in his prologue, he has a serious message. Are the 260 418 Parisians drowned by Gargantua to be regarded as being the population of Paris ? The number would not be improbable.
