Houdaille Jacques. — Interbreeding in Former French Colonies. Studies of interbreeding in the French colonies have been rare, as the subject has remained taboo until recently. The present paper is based in part on family reconstitution studies for Santo Domingo and Réunion, but mainly on anonymous analyses of parochial records. Except in Réunion, information on the beginning of European settlement has been virtually completely lost. It is necessary to have recourse to non-quantitative sources to observe that the shortage of white women must have led the original settlers to marry women of Indian or African origin.
