The law relating to divorce in Russia has changed substantially during the last hundred years. Under the Tsarist regime, it was practically impossible to obtain and was available to only a few privileged people. After the revolution of 1917, divorce became easier to obtain. This change was defended particularly by the revolutionaries of urban middle class origin. However, the abundance of abandoned children, the difficult position of divorced women and the frequency of bigamy led Stalin and the communists of rural origin, who were more concerned with traditional morality, to introduce more restrictive divorce laws in 1936 and...
