Fresel-Lozel Michel. — The Lille Colloquium : the fall of fertility. Limits and possibilities of government action. The fall of fertility in France arouses some anxiety. The sixth colloquium of demography for which most French demographers gathered in Lille in April 1979 was devoted to this question. Economists gave several explanations. Some consider children as a durable consumer good (School of Chicago) and apply the simplified psychology of « homo economicus ». Others are interested in a global balance between generations and in their competition on the labour market (Grauman and Easterlin).
