Tabutin Dominique. The Excess Mortality of Women in Europe before 1940. In the past female excess mortality was recorded especially during the reproductive ages. An analysis of data for four European countries (Sweden, France, England and Wales and Belgium), shows that this female excess mortality became more marked during the 19th century, chiefly at the adolescent ages. It was only around 1939 that it completely disappeared from France. A study of the development of mortality causes by sex in England-Wales shows that infectious diseases continued to be prevalent among women for a long time.
