SUMMARY The recent censuses taken in Asia provide a better knowledge of the population of some countries and of the annual growth rates especially during the period between two censuses, i.e. generally the years 1960- 1970. These rates which range from 2 to 3 % are not the highest in the world but due to the continuous decline of mortality they are likely to be on the upgrade. As a consequence of mortality, the mean length of life is 60 years and only exceptionally falls below 40. Fertility is on the dowgrade in some small countries such as Hong-Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, South Corea, Malaysia, Ceylon; this decrease can be attributed to a higher age at marriage and also to the practice of birth-control among married people.
