SUMMARY A statistical study of violent deaths for the whole of France is only possible since 1826, when the Comptes de la Justice Criminelle began to be compiled. Although they do not give an accurate picture of the level and structure of mortality from accidents, they do reflect its trend faithfully. Since 1906, there has existed a " Statistics of the causes of deaths " which gives a better indication of this mortality. The trend may be reconstructed from these two sources : there is a strong increase until 1865 {the industrial revolution) then stability and even a slight decrease for almost a century, followed by a steep rise since World War II.
